Rage and Injustice

Rage

It will hit you like a ton of bricks.

Like a hundred tons of bricks.

Not irritation. Not anger.

Rage. Madness. Fury.

I love that word – fury.

In Greek Mythology the Furies were goddesses of vengeance and justice, daughters of Gaea (aka Mother Earth), who punished crimes at the instigation of the victim.

Did you catch that?
These deities would demand justice and

vengeance on the behalf of the victim.
Punishers of moral crimes including anger,

infidelity, broken oaths, theft, and murder,
the furies would torment the offender with or into madness.

You’ll want to scream. You’ll want to cry. You’ll want to smash things.

Do it.

Let it out.

You have to.

Try to make sure it’s not something you actually want or care about,
like your phone, that heirloom, a memory you want to keep.
Find a safe place and let it out
.

When you’ve calmed yourself back down, maybe it’s time to look at what is really going on here.

Start with the small inconvenience that triggered this blind rage. What was it? The light turned red too quickly and you had to wait? You forgot to switch the laundry from the washer to the dryer. Again. And you still need those clothes clean? The dog chewed up your favorite pair of underwear?

It’s dumb and you know it, but this small injustice reminds you of the huge injustice you are dealing with. And that’s what it is.

Who do you battle to fix this? How can you battle to fix this? Where can you hide? Why can’t you hide? Why did this happen to you? Why did this happen at all? Why can’t it all just go away?

It’s just not fair.

Why can’t the world just be fair?

This. Sucks.

If you look back on your life, how many places do you see something you do and realize “we do that because one night that was how it worked best.” It wasn’t necessarily the best way to do it, but at the time it was the only thing that worked. Knowing what you know now, would you do it a different way? Establish a different routine? Set up a different boundary?

Think through some of those things.

Certain ones will be so glaringly obvious, you will cringe thinking how things might have been different if you had spoken up from the beginning.

Others will be much more obscure and you will think, “THAT was how this thing started?” or “THIS is what caused this other thing?”

Either way, if you are looking to make changes and make your life better, it’s time to do a full house-cleaning. Do YOU want to change?

Changing your mind should be something admirable, not embarrassing. It is a success and not a failure. It should be celebrated, not ridiculed.
