As one of the most brilliant women ever implored us:
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
Every day we are learning.
Every day we each have an opportunity to know more and do more to improve this world.
Come along with me for some new things I’ve learned.
Semicolon
The semicolon is used in writing indicating a pause, typically between two main clauses. More plainly, it connects to sentences that could stand on their own into one continuous sentence.
A semicolon tattoo is a tattoo of the semicolon punctuation mark (;), which is used as a message of affirmation and solidarity with those who have dealt with suicide, depression, addiction, and other mental health issues.
The first part is not over; the next part is coming.
Medusa
A Medusa tattoo often refers to surviving sexual assault/abuse.
One version of the mythology of Medusa: Medusa was one of the most beautiful women on the planet in her days. However she didn’t want to marry but wanted to become a priestess of Athena instead. The most important requirement for this was virginity. She became a perfect priestess after years. Too perfect because people no longer came to the temple to pay homage to Athena but only to see the beautiful Medusa. But Athena knew that this was not Medusas fault and spared her.
However, Poseidon noticed this. He and Athena hated each other. He came to earth to seduce Medusa, but she did not forget her vow and rejected Poseidon. Poseidon then raped Medusa in the temple. Athena blamed Medusa for this, turning her into what we all know her as: The snake beast. Anyone who looked into her eyes turned to stone. She fled.
After some time, however, she found an old temple far away that was once dedicated to Athena. She started worshiping her again. Athena noticed this and felt sorry for Medusa. She sent the warrior son of Zeus, his name was Perseus, to redeem Medusa, which he did with the help of Athena’s polished shield. He severed Medusa’s head and brought it Athena. From then on Athena glorified Medusa and immortalized her head in her shield. There are also some theories that say Athena actually granted the curse as a gift so no man would ever touch her again.
You are not alone. You are a survivor.
