Finding Foundation Right

Over the summer I launched myself on an adventure to find a new foundation.

I didn’t just try one new foundation.
Not just two, but FIVE new-to-me formulas of foundation.

It was quite the journey.

A note as I begin.
The most useful little helper in this adventure was
Sephora’s Shade Finder tool.
This works great if you already know your shade, or close to it.

Sephora's Shade Finder Tool

Where I started

CLINIQUE – Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealor

Shade: CN 10 Alabaster – fair shade; with a cool neutral undertone

Pros: LOVED the coverage, had been color-matched by Clinique beauty consultant and wore for over a year. Then, I started to notice the color was too dark (change of seasons? Age?)

Cons: Too heavy in Houston heat

What I tried

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA – Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

Shade: 150 – for light skin with neutral undertones

Pros: great coverage

Cons: too matte, appeared drying, could see every pore and wrinkle.

GIORGIO ARMANI BEAUTY – Luminous Silk Foundation

Shade: 5 – light to medium with neutral undertone

Pros: Nice and silky on my skin.

Cons: Not nearly enough coverage. Claims to be build-able, but adding multiple layers of foundation doesn’t work in the Houston heat. Melts right off.

GIVENCHY – Teint Couture Everwear Foundation

Shade 1: Y205 – light with warm undertones

Shade 2: Y200 – light with neutral yellow undertones

Pros: Lasted pretty well

Cons: Not enough coverage for my sun spots/skin damage. Oxidizes dark and yellow. Could probably try another color, but wasn’t that happy with the foundation overall.

NARS – Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation

Shade 1: Fiji – Light 5 – for light to medium skin with neutral undertones

Shade 2: Salzburg – Light 3.5 – for light skin with neutral undertones

Pros: Great application; okay coverage.

Cons: Would like more coverage – not enough coverage for my sun spots/skin damage. Easily transferable. It felt and looked like it was sitting on top of my pores.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA – Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation

Shade: 150 – for light skin with neutral undertones

Pros: This is a beautiful shade and the coverage is good.

Cons: This foundation stayed on the dewy side, which I didn’t prefer the feel.

*The matte wear was too drying and this one is too hydrating.
When Fenty finds a middle ground, I will definitely be back.

What I chose

CLINIQUE – Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer

Shade: CN 08 Linen – fair shade; with a cool neutral undertone

Pros: Coverage is my favorite of the ones I tried. I can still see my sun damage, if I look for it, but it’s not noticeable. Stays put.

Cons: Still a little heavy in the heat, can melt off.

Yep. Right back where I started.

As we’re slowly entering fall (#houstonweather),
the Clinique foundation wins due to the coverage and the staying power.
Maybe next spring I’ll try again for a suitable summer foundation.
