Understanding the Lyrics: Found Tonight

When you're happy, you hear the music; when you're sad, you understand the lyrics. - frank ocean

I’m back with another song that has been stuck in my head/speaking to me lately.

This song mash-up was created in the wake of the Parkland Shooting in 2018.

Let’s look past the fact that not much has changed regarding school shootings and the prevalence of guns in the US.

The sentiment and hope this song brings works so well for surviving this current season of the-world-is-on-fire.

Let’s all take a deep breath and get through this together.

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?
Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
When you're broken on the ground
You will be found

Found/Tonight

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Platt

We may not yet have reached our glory
But I will gladly join the fight
And when our children tell their story
They’ll tell the story of tonight
They’ll tell the story of tonight
Tonight

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?

Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
All we see is light
‘Cause maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay
For forever
‘Cause when you don’t feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand

And oh
Raise a glass to freedom
Something they can never take away
Oh
No matter what they tell you
Someone will coming running
To take you home
Raise a glass to all of us
Tomorrow there’ll be more of us
Telling the story of tonight
Out of the shadows

The morning is breaking (they’ll tell the story of tonight)
And all is new
All is new
All is new
It’s only a matter of
Time

Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
When you’re broken on the ground
You will be found
So let the sun come streaming in
‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again
If you only look around
You will be found

And when our children tell their story
You will be found
They’ll tell the story of tonight
Whoa
No matter what they tell you
Tomorrow there’ll be more of us
Telling the story of tonight
The story of tonight

Understanding the Lyrics: King of Anything

When you're happy, you hear the music; when you're sad, you understand the lyrics. - frank ocean

I’m back with another song that has been stuck in my head/speaking to me lately.

A lot of people are telling us what to think, how to think, and what not to think about.
I am so tired of unqualified individuals thinking they know what’s best for everyone else.

You've got opinions, man
We're all entitled to 'em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time,
And try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast
I'm not drowning, there's no one here to save.
You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

King of Anything

By Sara Bareilles
Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ’em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time,
And try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
You’re so busy making masks with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Let me hold your crown, babe
