Movie – Venom (2018)

Movie Synopsis:
Investigative journalist Eddie Brock attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of an alien symbiote that gives him a violent super alter-ego: Venom. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organisation looking for a symbiote of their own. (source – Rotten Tomatoes)

My take:

Okay, let’s be honest from the get go – I am SO superhero-movied-out. Yes, I will see Aquaman (eventually). Yes, I’ll watch Avengers: Endgame. Will I watch Shazam? Hard pass. Do I care about the 20 other movies slated to come out in the next few years? Really… no.

Second of all… I admittedly have a blind spot for Tom Hardy. I KNOW I’m not the only one. I find him to be a really good actor. Are all of his movies good? uh, NO. Do I tend to gravitate to any movie he’s in? yes.

My Take:

I sat down to watch this on a Saturday night when 1. I really didn’t care, 2. MyHusband wanted to watch it, and 3. I was prepared to scroll Instagram the whole time.

Okay. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed it!*

I found myself laughing many times. I felt Tom Hardy did a good job portraying someone with a surprise parasite symbiote in them. The scenes where Venom first takes over Eddie’s body to escape the guys tracking them down was really well done.

HOWEVER, the final fight scene between Venom and [spoiler proof], was too long.** I just felt 1. we got the point, 2. we know how this is going to end, 3. get on with it!

*The ultimate surprise non-hate move for me was Jack Reacher. I was so angry with myself on how much I paid attention to this movie AND how good I thought it was.
**The scene I hate THE MOST in it’s waste of my time is the highway chase/fight scene in The Matrix Reloaded. Ugh.

The Final Verdict

SK Movie Rating Scale

Me:                3.25 stars
MyHusband: 3 stars
MyChild:          N/A (duh)

We hope you enjoy!

  1. Great review! I’m glad you enjoyed this – although I suspect it may be Tom Hardy to thank for it. He’s definitely the reason I enjoyed it! I actually almost skipped it because of the negative reviews but I’m glad I gave it a try in the end.
